A groundbreaking collaboration between npower renewables and Wavegen.
- One of the world's first wave power stations.
- Concrete breakwater structure located c.300 metres off the coast at Siadar Bay.
- Possibly linked to the shoreline via a fixed link.
- Breakwater will consist of 9-10 concrete caissons placed together on the seabed, each of approximately 25m in length.
- Caissons will weigh approximately 3000 tonnes each.
- 36-40 Wells turbines to generate electricity, housed in the caissons.
- 3-4MW of generation capacity.
- Enough to power 1500 homes, 1/5th of the population of Lewis and Harris.
- During construction, up to 50 jobs will be created.
- The onshore building will attract tourist interest, with interpretation boards and a viewing platform.
- Shelter provided by the breakwater will help facilitate sea users entering the sea at Siadar Bay for fishing and recreation.
